Bake Ability is a mission-based
bakery with a program (Recipe for Life ™) created by parents, designed to combat
the staggering (85%+) rate of unemployment among disabled adults over 21. Bake
Ability opened in February 2021, serving freshly baked sweet and savory treats
out of our Buckingham store. We currently employ 19 individuals with
developmental disabilities on a part time basis. We also sell our baked
goods at various markets and events in Bucks County (Warrington Farmers Market,
St. Jude Fall Fest, Warminster Historical Society Fall Event, Bucks County Community
College Classic Car Show for Autism).
In addition to Bake
Ability’s delicious baked products, Bake Ability’s mission is already making an
impact in Bucks County. We include other disabled members of the community,
hosting students from CB West and New Hope Solebury who come for work based
learning, as well as attendees of another local non-profit, The Next Steps
Program’s “Explore Doylestown” Program. We provide meaningful training and employment
to a grossly underserved and highly unemployed community, adults with
developmental disabilities over the age of 18. We have found that this employee
population is trainable, eager, loyal and wants nothing more than to feel like
they are making both an impact and contribution in their local community.
